For those who actually read the official guidance put out by the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), it was pretty obvious no-one was going to get punished for non-compliance on day one, as long as you could show that your organisation is reviewing the impact of the new rules and has some kind of plan in place to ensure your online activities meet the requirements.
To see a typical example of the impact of these new regulations it is worth looking at what the ICO itself has done to it's own website.
It is important to emphasise that any publicly available online service your organisation offers comes within the scope of the new regs. This could cover HTML email, video and any other service that uses cookie type methods to capture, track or record user activity.
